Financial Data FAQs

When are your charts updated?

Our equity charts and many of our index charts are updated continually throughout the trading day. During market hours, the right-most bar on our SharpCharts will be highlighted in either yellow (delayed) or green (non-delayed) to indicate that the bar contains data that is still changing. We also place the date and time of the most recent quote used near the top of the chart.

If you are seeing out-of-date charts, check out our Computer Configuration FAQ for ways to fix the problem.

You don't have the stock/index/fund that I'm looking for. Can you add it?

Probably. We track over 23,000 different ticker symbols and we add up to 200 new ones every day. If you need to see a chart for a stock or fund that we don't have, use our Symbol Request form to let us know. Please keep in mind the following rules however:

  1. We currently track US stocks, indices, and mutual funds that are listed on the three major US exchanges - NYSE, Amex and Nasdaq.
  2. We also track Canadian stocks and indices that are listed on the TSX. We do not have access to Canadian Mutual Fund data.
  3. We add market indices if our data vendor can provide them for us reliably. Our access to commodity indices, currency indices, and international indices is limited to what we already provide on an end-of-day basis.
  4. We do not have access to foreign-owned pink sheet stocks or, American Depository Receipts, (i.e. those whose tickers have 5 letters and end with "F" or "Y").
  5. We cannot add large numbers of symbols at once. Please limit your requests to symbols that are extremely important to your investing.

Why is your Gold price different from other sources?

Like all of our commodity indices, our $GOLD symbol is not technically a gold price at all. It is an index value that corresponds to a theoretical, non-tradable "continuous" contract for gold that uses a weighted average all of the currently open gold contracts. It is provided on an end-of-day basis so that users can compare gold's mid- to long-term performance and trends to other markets. It should not be used to make trading decisions concerning gold itself.

I see a chart with a bad data point. How can I report it?

Despite our best efforts, sometimes outlying data points get into our database. If you spot a suspicious looking quote, please report it to us using our Feedback form and we'll investigate. In the form, please include a link to the chart in question and a description of what you are seeing on the chart. Please keep the following things in mind when reporting bad data:

  1. Check to see if other web data sources have the same bad information. We've found that the data at Yahoo Finance is pretty accurate and the first thing we usually do whenever we receive a bad data report is to compare our data to Yahoo's. If our numbers match Yahoo's, then we will need more documentation from you about why you think the change should be made.
  2. We adjust our historical data to account for splits and distributions. We've written several articles about why we do this. Check our Data Adjustments page to see if this symbol has recently undergone a split or distribution before reporting the problem.
  3. We usually do not change outlying data points on our intraday charts since we do not have an independent source to compare things to. It is not uncommon for intraday charts to contain points that are outside of a stock's daily quote range. The daily quote range is audited by the exchanges after the close and may be updated later as part of that audit process. Intraday data is not audited in that way.
  4. Daily quotes are not "official" until after 6:30PM Eastern due to the auditing process mentioned above. You should wait until after then to report issues with today's quotes.

Can I export your data to another program like Excel or MetaStock?

Not directly. We are not a data provider, we are an online charting service. Extra! members can see two years of daily data in table format for data verification purposes.

How can I find out which stocks belong to a particular index or industry?

We do not track the components of every index that we track. The publishers of each index usually maintain that information on their websites - for instance, the Dow Jones Index site and the Amex site. Yahoo.com also publishes index component lists like this one.

How do you calculate your Bullish Percent data?

A Bullish Percent Index (BPI) can be created for any group of stocks. We publish several BPIs for entire markets as well as for the common S&P Sector designations. To calculate at BPI, first determine the number of stocks that have a specific P&F chart pattern called a P&F Buy Signal. Then divide that number by the total number of stocks in the group. Because it is so popular, every day we publish the list of NYSE stocks that we use in our calculation as well as the NYSE stocks that are current on a P&F Buy Signal. You can find that information on this page.
