Double-Top and Initiation Impulse Spell Trouble

by Erin Swenlin

What looked like a short-term double-bottom formation, has now reconfigured into a double-top. So in the matter of a week, we've gone from positive indicators and a bullish double-bottom formation to negative indicators in all three time frames and a bearish double-top formation. We see price has been oscillating in a large consolidation channel. At first it looked like a double-bottom but with the failure of price to break through that neckline and its consequential decline, now we have a double-top within that channel. One thing we do know, price will eventually move out of the Read More

DP Market Update: Double-Bottom Aborts - January 27, 2015

by Erin Swenlin

Earnings from big companies like Microsoft, P&G and Caterpillar were disappointing and are taking some of the blame for today's drop. On the flip side, Apple crushed previous estimates, but it didn't save it from the tidal wave of selling in the general market, moving 3.5% lower. It's already up 5.5% in after hours trading. The purpose of the DecisionPoint Market Update is to quickly review the day's action, internal condition, and Trend Model status of the broad market (S&P 500), the nine SPDR Sectors, the U.S. Dollar, Gold, Crude Oil Read More

Intermediate-Term Indicators Positive Crossovers and Industrials Equal-Weighted ETF (RGI) BUY Signal

by Erin Swenlin

I've been watching our indicator charts very closely for quite sometime now as we prepare for a possible breakout from the double-bottom formation on the SPY. Additionally, we had a Trend Model signal change on our DP Alert Daily Report (found in the subscriber-only DP Reports Blog).  Intermediate-Term indicators, the ITBM and ITVM have had positive crossovers their EMAs which is very bullish for the intermediate term. Notice how bottoms on these indicators tend to come right at most price bottoms. This particular bottom is better than the previous, mainly because it is Read More

First, thank you for all of your well wishes and comments sent to my Dad, Carl as he continues to recover from quadruple bypass surgery. He's making progress, it is just slow going, especially as far as he's concerned! My last two blog article titles were "Short-Term Indicators Move South" and two days later my blog article was "Short-Term Indicators Turn Up". I received the email below: "Catching up on reading your articles and I noted a suspected contradiction in the titles of two recent articles. Really !!! There was a flip in the short-term indicator in two Read More

Intermediate-Term Trend Model BUY Signal on GOLD

by Erin Swenlin

GOLD: As of 1/12/2015 Gold is on a Trend Model BUY signal. The LT Trend Model, which informs our long-term outlook, is on a SELL signal as of 2/15/2013, so our long-term posture is bearish. The big news for gold is that for the first time since June 2014, it had an Intermediate-Term Trend Model BUY signal generate as the 20-EMA crossed above 50-EMA. Gold broke above its first area of serious resistance today. Last week it had reached resistance along the declining tops line drawn from the July high, but didn't clear it. Besides a new Trend Model BUY signal, I like Read More

Carl Swenlin, Overachiever

by Erin Swenlin

I thought our subscribers might appreciate a quick update on why we missed our DP Daily Update in the DP Reports blog for the first time since we started it on the old DecisionPoint website.  Yesterday morning, Carl went in for triple bypass surgery. Well, leave it to Carl to overachieve, rather than a triple bypass, he ended up with a quadruple bypass. Surgery went well and he is already making an impressive recovery. Getting a blog entry published yesterday was not possible, I simply was unable to concentrate enough to writehe is my Dad after all Read More

Despite the low volume of holiday trading, there was still a distinct price top that formed during the past two weeks. An ultra-short-term positive is that price broke out from overhead resistance that had formed starting Wednesday.
