Erin's Hits: Creating a Workflow ChartList

by Erin Swenlin

** While Erin is away, we will be posting some of her "greatest hits" educational blogs. Some information may be dated **   With the release of several DecisionPoint ChartPacks (to learn more about them and how to install them click here), many users have expressed that they are overwhelmed by the quantity of quality indicator charts. This is not news to me, we had the same feedback from new users to the DecisionPoint.com website. The great news is that you can customize what you see on StockCharts.com, whereas on DecisionPoint.com you had to figure out the links and create a Read More

DP Alert: Gold Generates New BUY Signal

by Carl Swenlin

Gold generated a new IT Trend Model (ITTM) BUY signal as the 20EMA crossed up through the 50EMA. In the last year there have been six ITTM signal changes, and price has been running flat for six months, a configuration that facilitates even more whipsaw. There is, however, more to the picture than is visible on the daily chart. On Friday I wrote: For several months gold has been in a trading range. Considering that the dollar (UUP above) has been falling during that time, we can conclude that there is an intrinsic weakness in gold that offsets some of the advantage it should gain from a Read More

DecisionPoint Weekly/Monthly Wrap -- Possible Top

by Carl Swenlin

There is always something for the market to wait for. Last week it was options expiration, and this week it was the Fed meeting. There was nothing new from the Fed, so there were no market hiccups as a result. SPY made new, all-time highs again this week. On Thursday price took a shot at the bottom of the short-term trading range, but it recovered by the end of the day. While the trading range remained intact, Friday's price action hinted at the possibility of a short-term top, as the daily PMO (Price Momentum Oscillator) topped. Monday will be the last trading day of the month, but I Read More

DP Bulletin: Dow Industrials ($INDU) Trigger PMO BUY Signal

by Carl Swenlin

Today the Dow Industrials ($INDU) PMO signal changed from a SELL to a BUY. The just retired SELL signal was only three days old because the daily PMO is currently very flat and close to its signal line. In this configuration the PMO is subject to frequent whipsaw signal changes. As I have frequently said, signal changes are information flags, not action commands. Looking at this chart we can see that price is above all four EMAs, and the PMO is well into positive territory. Could hardly be more bullish. Helpful DecisionPoint Links: Read More

by Erin Swenlin

** While Erin is away, we will be posting some of her "greatest hits" educational blogs. Some information may be dated **   One of the features that I used frequently on the DecisionPoint.com website was Gallery View in the ChartTool. DP Bulletin: Dow Industrials ($INDU) Trigger PMO SELL Signal

by Erin Swenlin

Today the Dow Industrials ($INDU) lost its recent PMO BUY signal from 7/14 and has logged a PMO SELL signal on the DP Scoreboard. The chart is below. It looks like a short-term double-top in the thumbnail. Support is holding at 21500, but this recent PMO SELL signal and the OBV setting up negative divergences between price bottoms and OBV bottoms.  Helpful DecisionPoint Links: DecisionPoint Shared ChartList and DecisionPoint Chart Gallery Trend Models Price Read More

DP Bulletin: NDX Triggers IT PMO BUY Signal - Equal-Weight Consumer Discretionary (RCD) IT Trend Model BUY Signal

by Erin Swenlin

Today the Nasdaq 100 Scoreboard turned completely green. Well, it lost the only red arrow it was clinging to on the intermediation-term Price Momentum Oscillator (PMO). The equal-weight Consumer Discretionary ETF (RCD) also triggered a new Intermediate-Term Trend Model (ITTM) BUY signal. The charts are below for your review. With a fresh all-time high logged and a breakout above previous short-term resistance, I suspect this signal will hold this time barring a serious pullback or correction. I think my only caution on this ITTM BUY signal is Read More

DecisionPoint Weekly Wrap -- Another Breakout to New, All-Time Highs

by Carl Swenlin

Last week the market broke out of a month-long rounded top to new, all-time highs. This week there was a short snapback to the point of breakout, then on Wednesday it once again broke to new, all-time highs. Thursday and Friday it again pulled back to the point of breakout. Friday was options expiration day, so there is no sinister message to be found in the high volume on SPY. The DecisionPoint Weekly Wrap presents an end-of-week assessment of the trend and condition of the stock market (S&P 500), the U.S. Dollar, Gold, Crude Oil, and Read More

DP Alert: SPY Closes on All-Time High - Utilities ETFs ITTM BUY Signals - PMO BUY Signal on Gold

by Erin Swenlin

No new changes on the DecisionPoint Scoreboards although I happen to know there is an intermediate-term PMO BUY signal waiting in the wings on the NDX. That signal will not go final until after Friday's trading. Utilities SPDR (XLU) and the equal-weight Utilities ETF (RYU) both garnered IT Trend Model BUY signals. Gold turned in a PMO BUY signal on the daily chart and TLT managed a new ST Trend Model BUY signal. Where's the bear? DP Alert: All-Time Highs Create New Support Level for SPY

by Erin Swenlin

No new changes to report on the DecisionPoint Scoreboards, although if you didn't read about it last Friday, we did see FOUR new PMO BUY signals on all four indexes. The only "red" on the Scoreboards are on the IT PMO signals which are found on the weekly charts. You can take a look at all of the Scoreboard weekly charts annotated in the DecisionPoint ChartList. The purpose of the DecisionPoint Alert Daily Update is to quickly review the day's action, internal condition, and Trend Model status of the broad market (S&P 500), the Read More

DecisionPoint Weekly Wrap -- Dollar In Trouble

by Carl Swenlin

Rounded top, schmounded top. This week the market couldn't have cared less as it broke through to new, all-time highs. The headline regarding the dollar is not exactly news, but the dollar is getting particularly weak. More on that below. The DecisionPoint Weekly Wrap presents an end-of-week assessment of the trend and condition of the stock market (S&P 500), the U.S. Dollar, Gold, Crude Oil, and Bonds. DP Alert: Indicators Looking Bullish in Short and Intermediate Terms - XLU Triggers IT Trend Model Neutral Signal

by Erin Swenlin

No changes on the DecisionPoint Scoreboards. They all look the same which might be a little confusing given the bifurcated market we have witnessed over the past few weeks. While most indexes are testing all-time highs, the NDX needs more help and today it couldn't get past the declining tops line. The purpose of the DecisionPoint Alert Daily Update is to quickly review the day's action, internal condition, and Trend Model status of the broad market (S&P 500), the nine SPDR Sectors, the U.S. Dollar, Gold, Crude Oil, and Bonds. Short-Term Trend Model Whipsaws Plague DecisionPoint Scoreboards

by Erin Swenlin

Yet again, more whipsaw on the DecisionPoint Scoreboards. The Short-Term Trend Model (STTM) is highly sensitive given that it is based on 5/20-EMA crossovers. However, the main problem we have is consolidation. Price hit all-time highs, but has continued to meander sideways. This will draw the EMAs together and in the case of the 5/20-EMAs, they end up braiding and creating plenty of STTM whipsaw signals. Not so helpful during consolidation phases, but quite helpful to very short-term traders when the market is trending. The NDX gapped up today Read More

DP Alert: Rounded Top Concerning - Gold Breaks Through Neckline

by Erin Swenlin

No new signal changes on the DecisionPoint Scoreboards, but we did see three new Intermediate-Term Trend Model (ITTM) Neutral signals generate on three different sectors. Utilities, Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples. It's odd to see both Consumer Staples and Discretionary hitting bearish signals, but I think that is a symptom of the rotation of money throughout the various sectors. The purpose of the DecisionPoint Alert Daily Update is to quickly review the day's action, internal condition, and Trend Model status of the broad market Read More

DecisionPoint Weekly Wrap -- Still Topping

by Carl Swenlin

During a holiday week we don't expect much action, and this week was no exception. The market has been grinding away in a narrow range since the beginning of June, and a rounded top has formed. A rounded top is bearish, but in this persistent bull market it may just be a trick of the light. The DecisionPoint Weekly Wrap presents an end-of-week assessment of the trend and condition of the stock market (S&P 500), the U.S. Dollar, Gold, Crude Oil, and Bonds. DP Bulletin: New IT PMO SELL Signal on NDX - ST Trend Model Neutrals for SPX and OEX

by Erin Swenlin

We have three new signals to report on the DecisionPoint Scoreboards and none of them are good. Momentum was already waning with PMO SELL signals coming in late June, but now we are seeing the destruction of upward price trends. Admittedly, the Short-Term Trend Model (STTM) is based on 5/20-EMA crossovers, so we will see a lot of whipsaw, especially if the market consolidates sideways. Interestingly, the NDX, which has been surging of late, posted a new Intermediate-Term PMO SELL signal. These signals are retrieved from the weekly chart and therefore, don't go "final" until trading on the Read More

Short-Term Price Trend Turning Up? Equal-Weight Consumer Staples ETF (RHS) ITTM Neutral Signal

by Erin Swenlin

It happened so fast that I missed it on Monday. Both the SPX and OEX generated ST Trend Model Neutral signals Friday and Monday, but today those signals have already bitten the dust as new ST Trend Model BUY signals came back to roost on the DecisionPoint Scoreboards. Those aren't the only two signals that appeared today, the equal-weight Consumer Staples ETF (RHS) triggered a new IT Trend Model Neutral signal. Let's start with the OEX and SPX. My concern with both of these charts is the rounded top formation. This would suggest lower prices, not higher prices. The Read More

DecisionPoint Weekly/Monthly Wrap -- Topping In Progress?

by Carl Swenlin

June has been a tedious month for the market with SPY being confined mostly within a three point range. I can't help noticing the rounded shape of June's price activity, which makes me think we may be seeing a rounded top leading to a period of falling prices. Ha! How refreshing that would be, but the bull market has been very stingy in that regard. Nevertheless, the PMO SELL signal for SPY says there is a chance of some bearish action. The DecisionPoint Weekly Wrap presents an end-of-week assessment of the trend and condition of the stock Read More
