Java Troubleshooting - Step 1
In order to use our 'Dynamic' charting tools like our MarketCarpets, our PerfCharts and our ChartNotes annotation tool, you need to have a software component called "Java" properly installed on your computer. Typically, Java is installed automatically along with your web browser however sometimes the installation doesn't occur correctly. This first test will help us determine if you have any version of Java installed at all.
Want to learn more about Java? Here's a link to some additional info.
A little lower down on this page, we have inserted a very simple Java program (called an 'applet') into this web page. First, make sure that your browser has finished loading the web page. Sometimes this can be trickier than you might think. Often, the rest of the webpage will appear before the Java applet is finished downloading. Even if the word "Done" appears at the bottom of the window, the applet may still be downloading.
Here's the first test applet:
Once you are certain that the applet has finished downloading, look at the results and click on one of the following buttons:
- If you see a green rectangle with the words "Test #1 Passed!" inside, then Click Here to move on to Step 2.
- If you are certain the program has finished downloading and yet you only see an empty space, a solid grey rectangle, or a puzzle piece icon then Click Here for some possible solutions to the problem.
Eureka!
You've helped us narrow down the problem! It appears that you do not have any kind of Java support what-so-ever in your browser right now. Again, our 'dynamic' analysis tools require Java support in order to work. There are a couple of reasons why you are seeing this problem:
- Your browser may not support Java at all. So-called 'applicance' browsers like WebTV, older browsers with version numbers below 4.0, and new browsers that are still being developed often don't include Java support. If you are using one of those browsers, then there isn't much we can do to fix the problem. There may be a work-around available on your browser vendor's homepage.
- Your browser's Java support isn't installed yet. Some browsers require a separate download to install Java. For example, the standard installation for Netscape 6.0 and certain versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer do not come with Java. In that case, please click on the following link to install the official version of Java from Sun Microsystems - http://java.sun.com/getjava.
- Your browser's Java support is disabled. Even if Java is installed properly, it may be disabled. As a security precaution, most browsers allow Java support to be disabled via a checkbox setting. For Microsoft Explorer users, the setting is under Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Java. For Firefox users, the setting is under Tools/Options/Content/Enable Java.
If one of those suggestions didn't solve your problem, please let us know. Keep in mind that you should still be able to use our premier charting tool, SharpCharts, as that doesn't require Java support.
