The American Stock Exchange (AMEX) created and published a series of indices for select sectors and industry groups. The AMEX has since been taken over by NYSE Euronext and these indices are now listed as NYSE Arca Equity Indices. Some of the more popular indices include the NYSE Arca Airline Index ($XAL) and the NYSE Arca Natural Gas Index ($XNG).
The chart below shows the NYSE Arca Airline Index ($XAL) with a 50-day and 200-day moving average. This index can be plotted using intraday data as well.

All index symbols use INDX for the exchange column (Exch) in the catalog results. Users can preface their search with INDX and then add other terms to further quantify the search. Searching for “INDX and NYSE and Arca” (without quotations) in the symbol catalog would show results for the NYSE Arca Indices.
