Problems Printing our Java Charts

Unfortunately, most web browsers do not print our Java-based charts properly. So instead of using your browser's File/Print command, we recommend that you print a "screenshot" – a computer-generated snapshot of your screen. We've listed the steps for doing this below. We've also included some links to a couple of low-cost utilities that makes the whole process much simpler.

Printing a Screenshot

Here's how you can use the tools already built into your operating system to create and print a screenshot of our Java-based charts. Just set up the chart exactly like you'd want it to look on the printout, then follow the directions below. You might want to print these instruction out before starting.

Windows XP

  1. Hold down the ALT key and press the Print Screen key (may be labelled PrtSc OR PrtScn).
  2. Press the Start button and choose Run from the Start menu.
  3. Type pbrush.exe and press Enter to start Windows' built-in Paintbrush program
  4. Chose Edit > Paste from the menu bar. If the program asks you about enlarging the bitmap, press Yes.
  5. Use the File > Print command to send the image to your printer.

Windows Vista

Windows Vista users can use Vista's "Snipping" tool which is discussed in this article from About.com.

Mac

  1. Press and release Command+Shift+4 (the command key has a cloverleaf or apple on it)
  2. Drag the mouse across the portion of the screen you want to print.
  3. Find the newest file called Picture 1 (or Picture 2, etc.) on your hard drive or desktop.
  4. Highlight the file by clicking on it once.
  5. Select Print from the File menu.

Screenshot Utilities

The above steps can be cumbersome, time-consuming, and confusing. Here are two screenshot utilities that we really like. They can make printing a screenshot as simple as a single mouse-click. You can download free trial software by clicking on either link. If you like the tool, single-use licenses cost about US$25.
