Discipline is the name of the game! Only buy stocks when their 2-5 day EMA crosses over their 21 day EMA and when confirmed by RSI or PPO or your favorite indicator. The M/A show trends evolving. Sell when the inverse evolves.
Avoid stocks in a down trend when the short term M/A is below the long term M/A even if TV pundits recommend them. A crossover is called GOLDEN CROSS, a cross under is called DEATH CROSS.
How do you know when a stock changes its ST trend? Trends are changing slowly and usually over several days. Trends can last for several days, weeks or even months. Key is to recognize trend changes early. Do NOT listen to talking heads on TV or the radio. Everybody has an opinion. Sometimes they guess right, sometimes wrong. But the price and its trend are always right.
Most SP-500 companies have been in business for many years. Every company MUST report earnings once every 3 months. That creates volatility. If you do not like volatility, buy the SPY or any other index ETF.
