My web programmers are forcing me to write this at gunpoint. Well... sort of. They really do have a good point though.
From time to time a user will write to us with a problem that they are having and, after digging into the issue for a while, we end up completely stumped. None of the standard advice for fixing things helps. None of the non-standard advice helps either. We all just stand around scratching our heads and throwing our hands up in despair.
These are not problems with our site per se. The people having trouble are doing the exact same things that tens of thousands of other users are also doing. It's just that it doesn't work for them.
Nine times out of ten however, the people with the problem are using Microsoft's Internet Explorer. (No, really! I did the math. OK, technically it's 9.04 times out of ten.)
Now, I don't know all the reasons why that is. Lots of people speculate and pontificate about which browser is better and why. I'm not here to get into all that. All I know is that, on a percentage basis, people who use Internet Explorer have more of these "unsolvable" problems with our site than people that don't.
Why am I telling you this? Why does it matter if things work fine for you?
Maybe it doesn't matter at all, but if you are the kind of person that is willing to go through a little proactive "pain" to reduce the chances of problems in the future, I want you to consider using Firefox - the free browser from Mozilla.
There, I said it. After almost ten years of running this website, it is clear to me (and these gun toting web programmers behind me) that Firefox users have fewer problems with Java, fewer problems with cookies, fewer problems with plug-ins, fewer problems with popups - just fewer problems period.
Now, let me be clear: We are going to continue to support Internet Explorer users to the best of our ability for years and years to come. We are not going to be adding features to our site that would prevent IE from working. We're going to continuing doing what we have always done to try and be as browser neutral as possible. If you use and love IE, nothing has changed.
But, if it doesn't matter to you which browser you use as long as it works - I think you should consider using Firefox.
(And, yes, we work hard to support other, browsers, also - but right now IE and Firefox are the most used on our site by far.)
