Flash ChartNotes to the Rescue!

 |

As many of you know, we provide a tool called "ChartNotes" for people to use when they want to add annotations to their charts or inspect the data on the charts.  ChartNotes is a Java-based program that was originally written back in 2003 and has worked well for most of our users since that time.

Unfortunately, ChartNotes doesn't work for all of our users.  For various reasons (some of which we understand, some of which - frankly - we don't) the Java plugin that ChartNotes needs simply will not run on some computers.  If Java doesn't work then ChartNotes won't work either...

...until now.

We've just completed a big effort here to create a version of ChartNotes that using the Flash plugin instead of Java.  This means that if - for whatever reason - you have not been able to use ChartNotes successfully before now, you can try our Flash version which should, hopefully, work better for you.

To use the Flash version, just click on the "Annotate (Flash)" link that's located just below the chart on the SharpCharts Workbench page.  We've highlighted it in yellow so you can't miss it.

Currently, this new Flash version is still in Beta - meaning that we are continuing to test it and fix bugs.  At this point we are pretty sure that most of the problems have been fixes and we'd like everyone to try it out.

Finally, there are no new features in this Flash version.  We consciously decided to keep it as similar to the Java version as possible.  Once we have a stable, working version of things that most people can use successfully, we'll go back and look at adding more features.

I tried Flash annotate and it works fine. I usually use the standard annotate tool with no problems (using Firefox and Vista) but I tried the flash version and it works also.
Thanks Chip, this should be a great help to those who have been having conflict problems with the Java based program and their particular computer system. I've tried the Flash system and all seems to work very well. My only concern is the "Detach" button at the bottom of the page is missing. With larger charts I always detach so I can use the tool menus without having to scroll back and forth, up / down. Hopefully this is a problem that can be addressed within the Flash program.
I too have never had a significant problem although on rare occasion the java-based program would stall. After a couple of retries it worked fine. I'm running Vista with an Intel i7 chip on a HP machine. The new program is much faster and you have my vote. I like it.
Flash version works OK with 2 Ghz, 2 Gb RAM PC, IE8, Flash 10.1, but I couldn't figure out how to save the trend line I drew. (I've never used Annotate before.)
Excellent. It is much faster than java-based annotate. Is the "detach" function missing? Could you reset the "detach" function as default?
Very nice application, much better than the traditional one. Thanks Cheers
While the java chart notes has always worked for me I have considered it a "weak link" for StockCharts. The Flash version is much better (ie loads and uploads much faster) Hope you make it the standard. My browser is Firefox.
works fine here, using vista, 2gig hd. the old one worked well. this version seems to load and update faster. I like it, so far.
Wow this is great. I always had some trouble with the other version. This one works really well. Thank you for this service.
Thank you StockCharts! This enhancement is awesome! I was unable to use the java annotation feature at work because my company limited the java function on our workstations. But the new flash version works well. I plan to use it a lot. Thanks again. Looks like I'll be renewing my subscription again! Keep up the good work. Hopefully the next enhancement will incorporate improved scalability of the charts. I would really, really appreciate that.
