How can I follow foreign indices?

 |

With developments in Greece, Europe, China and other parts of the world, some investors and traders may want to follow foreign stock indices throughout the day. The main country indices at stockcharts.com are usually EOD, which means they are updated at the end of the day. This includes the Athens General Index ($ATG), German Dax ($DAX) and Shanghai Composite ($SSEC). There are, however, a number of Dow Jones country indices that are updated throughout the day at stockcharts.com. Below is selection of these indices.

The chart below shows the Dow Jones Greece Index ($GRDOW) and the Dow Jones Europe Index ($E1DOW). Even though Greece represents only 3% of the EU economy, you can see how closely the Greece Index tracks the Europe Index. Until October 2009 that is. $GRDOW peaked in October and moved sharply lower the last few months. The March 2009 lows mark the next potential support level in this big downtrend. The Europe Index held up until early January, but took a rather hard hit over the last six weeks and broke below its fourth quarter lows.
