How can I follow commodities and commodity funds at StockCharts.com?

 |

StockCharts.com offers a number of ways to track commodities. There are specialized indices from Dow Jones as well as funds that focus on a specific commodity or commodity group. The table below shows 19 indices from Dow Jones. This provides an easy way to track cocoa, corn, coffee, sugar, wheat and other commodities.

The second table shows 17 commodity related funds from iPath. Some of these correspond directly to a Dow Jones index above. In other words, the Dow Jones index is the underlying security and the iPath fund is trying to duplicate the performance of this index.

Chartist can put the index and the fund together on a chart to compare performance. The chart below shows the price plots for the iPath DJ-UBS Agriculture Fund (JJA) and the DJ-USB Agriculture Index ($DJAAG). The indicator window shows the same two as performance charts. One is up 28.02% and the other is up 27.76%. As you can see from the lines and the end results, performance is pretty much identical. It may not be so for all index/fund combinations though.
